Bringing Blogging Back

That's right, I'm bringing it back for the umpteenth time. The sad truth is this might be a fickle attempt but no one really notices. I'm pretty sure the only people who read my thoughts these days are spam-bots and ex-boyfriends. I am grateful to the ex's because they are real people that actually distantly curious about me.

It's January, my birthday has passed... am I getting old enough now not to care? I still know my age but yesterday I wasn't sure what year it was. I was ahead of myself thinking it was 2014. I haven't made my yearly goals yet. I have a new job (that's a major reason why I haven't been writing, I have actually been working) doing something I love for a company that is fresh, progressive and exciting (though I might still be in the honeymoon stage). I have a decent grasp on my life as well, or perhaps I am choosing what battles to fight and which ones to worry about. And maybe, I have a grasp on boys. Maybe. Really, right now... I don't really care about boys (shocker!). I think that almost all of my relationships are healthy ones-- that's a lovely feeling.

I think the biggest thing is now, I want to travel. My new company is more flexible with time and I have lots of holiday time. This year should be the year that I shock myself and do something amazing. I have the ability, I'm just scared. I need someone else to commit to something for me and then I'll be down. It's making that choice though, so difficult.

I want to do some crafts-- a little creating. Find a new passion perhaps, and keep working on the ones I have.

Things have been good, even in the last 6 months of chaos and uncertainty. I dealt with losing my job like a champ. I was without work for a total of almost 3 weeks. I have nothing to complain about and though that feels fantastic in my head, heart and body... it makes for awful writing. I am motivated by the fireworks and angst to write and pour my soul out. No one wants to read peppy meanderings of joy. Mind you, since when have I ever written this for other people. Mostly, I write this for me. This blog has changed face so much in the years it has been around. I guess a little like me, it's always been the same but it's just evolved.

I'm hungry, I should find something to put in my mouth hole.

PS: the title has nothing to do with another blog "I'm Bringing Blogging Back"

Perfect for your kids or to add a little extra ambiance to your backyard or bedroom, these cool fire fly jars are ridiculously easy to make.

You just need a jar, diamond glitter, glow sticks, and some water. Granted, the glow sticks fade after awhile but you can enjoy them.

Use them as decorations for your next party.

Just follow the instructions in the picture.

How to Survive the Running of the Bulls

When you want advice on being famous for no reason, you ask a Kardashian. When you want advice on surviving the running of the bulls, you ask a Hemingway. Here is John (Ernest’s grandson, author of the family memoir Strange Tribe, two-time runner of the bulls) for a few pointers in advance of next month’s run.

The whole week’s a nonstop party.
“You meet friends, you make friends, if they don’t show up, you meet someone else,” he says. “People always ask, ‘How many hours of sleep did you get last night?’ ‘Oh, three. That’s not bad.’”

Well, except the running itself. “If you partied all night, you better be able to wake up and be in some sort of condition to run.”

There are a few simple rules: “You have to be 18. Don’t touch the bull. You can’t be drunk. And if you get knocked down, stay down.”

Leave the running shoes at home. “I just wear Converse.”

It’s over before you know it. “It’s two and a half, three minutes at the max.”

“Whether you’re a good runner or a bad runner, you could have bad luck. But that’s like crossing the street in NYC—you [could] get hit by a car.”

The people are more dangerous than the bulls. “You’ll get knocked down. You’re gonna get scraped, you may break a bone. It gets kind of crazy, with everyone pushing and everything.”

Beware of a bull separated from the herd. “If a bull becomes separated from the herd, it immediately stakes out a territory—anything within striking distance of its horns, he goes for. If he’s got you there, he will keep coming until he kills you.”

His grandfather ran. Or maybe he didn’t. “I see no proof that he did run, but there’s no proof that he didn’t. People have said forever that he used to run—that he ran like mad.”

A Walk in the Park

Last weekend I went on a hike with my good friend ZT and a group of fancy-dancy engineers. We tried to find a mountain to climb but ended up doing a basic loop around Barrier Lake in KCountry. I didn't enjoy it as much as other hikes, the biggest thing was suck a lack of compatibility with the other hikers. I usually hike with my good friend CW/Spaceman Spiff and we never have an issue. I always enjoy his company and I assume that we both have fun while trudging through the wild of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

[This is the part where I sound like an old fart]

There was too much talking, the pace wasn't fast enough and I felt completely disconnected from nature. It was odd and I felt uncomfortable. These people were experienced hikers and they had all the special gear but it wasn't my idea of a good time. I wasn't sure of what their "why" was when they hiked. I'm not sure if I am able to communicate effectively what the issue was. The next day I went for an urban walk with CW and it fit me better. Even though it was through a park in the city, it just fit me better. That was the recharge that I needed.

I crave nature, as if it's some kind of addictive substance. I crave the spicy, damn air and the sound of the bugs, the dirty feeling of my hands. If I spend too much time in the city I NEED to get out and get back to nature. Truth being that it recharges me. I just figured it was the lack of mental stimulation and the feeling of easiness but after reading a recent article, I am aware that there is something else.

I believe that they have it pegged exactly. This is why I enjoy nature so much. It doesn't have to be a challenging hike or an intense hike. Just a pretty hike, something that is easy to flow through, interesting. Different topography, different elements. It doesn't have to be sunny or amazing out, I hike in the winter. It's just got for me,  cleansing. Like what the article says... "forest bathing".

What could be more refreshing then that? Not much.

Urban Bocci with Gopher Hazard

Sometimes I read peoples posts and they have these witty code names for the people in their lives. I do that in real life but in my blog life, I lack. I either use their real names or their initials. BORING! Now I have a story about someone new but... I don't know what to call him. I sometimes call him Special K because he calls me Little B or Bossy B (truth)... I just suck at nicknames, lets be honest.

WHATEVER! I haven't been writing very much so lets just get on with it...

Last weekend I played Bocci with my old, new friend Kelly (we'll just use his real name). Kelly is fun because he's like me but in man form. We went to Jr High School together and I think we were boyfriend and girlfriend back then. I also think I was an immature bitch (as an 8th grader should be) and I broke up with him because he wore ugly sweaters.

I'm not like that anymore. I date people who don't have jobs so I'd be lucky if they even owned a sweater. Kidding, the jobless boys have money coming in, they just don't have the 9-5 Monday - Friday jobs that I'm use too. Kelly does and he no longer wears ugly sweaters and if he did, I wouldn't care anyway.

On a side note, Kelly gave me an engraved locket for Valentines Day when we were a hand holding couple. I think I still have it... I should go find it. Just for old times sake.

Anyways, we've been hanging out for the last few months and just having fun.  Last weekend we took a set of bocci balls to the local park and just started playing it in the rough, in the parking lot... it was a walking version of bocci and damn it was fun. There were all kind of hazards like gopher holes and dogs and children and gophers themselves that though the balls were food.

It was awesome and fun.

I drew a picture in Paint on my computer this morning just because. Just because...

Music is a Gift

the special C by Jesse

and by gift, I don't mean my gift. It's been a special little gift given to me by different people who have peppered my life.

I was given my first guitar by my sisters. Or maybe I just claimed it as mine. It had been given to her when she was 16 years old by a boy who she dated. I call that guitar Winnie, and he is a little warped, a little old and I spent my whole life messing around with it until I though about seriously considering doing something useful with it.

Then, on my 30th birthday, I was given one by my BFF Laura. A year later when I was wondering to the museum, I met a boy who lived near me and after spending some time talking at the pub, he said he could teach me to play. The following week, there I sat in his living room. It took a few hours but it was enough. Enough to get me started.

I practiced for a year, almost every day so when it came to a year I decided it was time to get a real guitar. It was this year that I was given my own guitar,  Strawberry Jam. She's beautiful and will be with me for a really long time.

I have received other gifts along the way. Songs to learn, songs to play. Different ways to play this chord or another. Different ways to strum and even different ways to hold my guitar. I can't really say that I have a talent, I just love to play. And it's special that my hobby isn't just mine, it's a collective effort of those who have touched my life musically over the last few years.

Last Wednesday, when I was jamming with my friends, Jesse taught me a different way to play a C chord and a G chord. It's beautiful and I'll never forget it. I'm even using my pinky (which I usually never do). Sam taught me some basics of plucking which I am still working hard at learning.

Music is a gift, and the gift isn't in my simple ability of playing. The gifts to me are in the moments and time spent with these people and their support in this new found love of mine.

and I will keep playing.

(whoa, this is a rusty post. I haven't written in a very long time)

Letting Go

Letting go is hard. I think all of us at one point or another have had the awful exercise of having to let go and/or being let go of. We all need it, to condition us to understand that nothing is ever "always"; forever. Everything in life is temporary.

A few years ago, I watched Eat Pray Love.. actually it was December 31st 2010. I watched the movie before getting ready to go out for New Years. It changed my life... since then I have watched it more than any other movie. Just last week I watched it twice on Tuesday. I only watch the middle; I only watch the good stuff.

Those who know me well in my life are aware of how I have learned in the last few years about letting go. How relationships have changed, and people have changed, how I have changed and the things around me. I have watched it affect those around me, some are able to glide over it with ease and acceptance. Other get stuck; struggling and learning how to process the whole situation until they discover for themselves what works for them.

Over the last year, I think back to one moment in Eat Pray Love about letting go. It fits. It's been advice I've given to people and it's been advice I've received, It's just written in a way that just fits for more than just me. Not just within relationships (both romantic and non-romantic), but also with situations and experiences. It can be our health, our jobs-- anything that surrenders us to grief and mourning.

The author is in an Ashram in India – a place where she went to meditate and find herself through Yoga, and is having a particularly difficult time that day. She has made a friend there, Richard from Texas, and right now they are at the dinner table together, talking.
(my *one* thought is in parenthesise)
“What’s got you all wadded up?” he drawls, toothpick in mouth, as usual.

“Don’t ask” I say, but then I start talking and tell him every bit of it, concluding with, “And worst of all, I can’t stop obsessing over David. I thought I was over him, but it’s all coming up again.”

He says, “Give it another six months, you’ll feel better.”

“I’ve already given it twelve months, Richard.”

“Then give it six more. Just keep throwin’ six months at it till it goes away. Stuff like this takes time.”

I exhale hotly though my nose, bull-like.

“Groceries [he calls her Groceries, how AWESOME is that?!],” Richard says, “listen to me. Someday you’re gonna look back on this moment of your life as such a sweet time of grieving. You’ll see that you were in mourning and your heart was broken, but your life was changing and you were in the best possible place in the world for it – in a beautiful place of worship, surrounded by grace. Take this time, every minute of it. Let things work themselves out here in India.”

“But I really loved him.”

“Big deal. So you fell in love with someone. Don’t you see what happened? This guy touched a place in your heart deeper than you thought you were capable of reaching. I mean you got zapped, kiddo. But that love you felt, that’s just the beginning. You just got a taste of love. That’s just limited little rinky-dink mortal love. Wait till you see how much more deeply you can love than that. Heck, Groceries – you have the capacity to someday love the whole world. It’s your destiny. Don’t laugh.”

“I’m not laughing.” I was actually crying. “And please don’t laugh at me now, but I think the reason it’s so hard for me to get over this guy is because I seriously believed David was my soul mate.”

“He probably was. Your problem is you don’t understand what that word means. People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then they leave. And thank God for it. Your problem is, you just can’t let this one go. It’s over, Groceries. David’s purpose was to shake you up, drive you out of your marriage that you needed to leave, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light could get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you had to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master and beat it. That was his job, and he did great, but now it’s over. Problem is, you can’t accept that his relationship had a real short shelf life. You’re like a dog at the dump, baby – you’re just lickin’ at the empty tin can, trying to get more nutrition out of it. And if you’re not careful, that can’s gonna get stuck on your snout forever and make your life miserable. So drop it.”

“But I love him.”

“So love him.”

“But I miss him.”

“So miss him. Send him some love and light every time you think about him, then drop it. You’re just afraid to let go of the last bits of David because then you’ll be really alone, and Liz Gilbert is scared to death of what will happen if she’s really alone. But here’s what you gotta understand, Groceries. If you clear out all that space in your mind that you’re using right now to obsess about this guy, you’ll have a vacuum there, an open spot – a doorway. And guess what the universe will do with the doorway? It will rush in – God will rush in – and fill you with more love than you ever dreamed. So stop using David to block that door. Let it go.”

“But I wish me and David could —“

He cuts me off. “See, now that’s your problem. You’re wishin’ too much, baby. You gotta stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone oughtta be.”

AMEN.
Eat, Pray, Love (by Elizabeth Gilbert)

Nothing is real until you let go completly.

Slumber Eats

Sleep and I are fair weathered friends. You may remember my challenges last year

and now, I sleep pretty good. I don't need nearly as much sleep as I did before which is nice too.

I know we all struggle with it at some time or another. I just read this article about foods to eat for better sleep. If something as simple as having the right kind of bed time snake might help make sleep a little better, why not.

I will cut and paste the article below.

Here's an important strategy to live younger and longer: Get enough sleep. Insomnia -- or even just getting less than 6 hours of good sleep a night -- increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and viral infections, but snoozing 6½ to 7½ hours can make your RealAge younger.

Did you know humans die earlier without sleep than they do without food? Fortunately, food may hold the solution to getting the ZZZs you need. A couple of hours before bedtime, curl up with one of the following sleepy-time snacks that get your brain to release sleep-friendly chemicals. (Take this assessment to find out what's causing your sleep trouble.)

1.Almonds: A handful contains muscle-relaxing magnesium and sleep-inducing tryptophan, which increases the brain's level of feel-good serotonin.

2.Bananas: Beneath the peel is a trifecta of soothers: serotonin, magnesium, and melatonin, your body's natural sleep regulator. (Here's another health benefit of sleep.)

3.Skim milk: Mom was right -- a warm glassful will help you sleep better. The milk's tryptophan has a sedating effect. Plus, it's calcium that helps your brain use that tryptophan.

4.Oatmeal: Oats are rich in sleep-regulating melatonin. If you drizzle just a little honey on top, it tells your brain to turn off orexin, a neuropeptide linked to alertness.

5.Whole-wheat bread: A slice of toast dotted with banana slices releases insulin, which helps tryptophan get to your brain. There it changes into serotonin and whispers, "Sweet dreams.

Mix and match the following for-a-good-night's-sleep foods:

•Banana-Walnut Oatmeal. Walnuts, like almonds, contain sleepy-time tryptophan.

•Oatmeal & Whole-Wheat Bread. Serve up a warm slice to help your body relax before heading to bed.
•Bagel Gone Bananas. This grab-and-go breakfast can double as a soothing bedtime snack.

Taking a Break from my Head

I haven't been blogging very much over here because I have just wanted to take a break from my head. I've also been crazy busy at work and getting my life on a different track.

I've been looking for new work because it's time, it's been time for a year but... now it's really time to go. Things are slowing down and I won't be screwing my company over. My biggest goal is working for a company that treats all their employees well. I am loyal and prefer to work my way through my growth within a corporation then by changing companies all together. I just no longer believe that I have space to grow where I am now.

So, change is good and I'm excited and feeling rather positive about things.

I also want to work on my hobbies more. I have that other blog B in the City, the intention with that is to bring my passion for Calgary into a realm that others can access. I love to eat, I love to do, I love to participate in life and all that fun stuff, so why not share it. Because it's a personal project, when I don't have time I don't post. It's inconsistent but whatever, I"m not to worried. I have 4 followers, one being me. I would like to put more attention into it though. I know people are always looking and though there are lost of vessels in which people can obtain info, it never hurts to have one more.

Things are good, as always. I'm working on my head, my heart and my soul. The biggest dissatisfaction comes from my job situation and the amount of apathy I have for it. Once that changes I'm sure I'll have a whole new outlook on life again. And finally taking control and trying to change it, that has made a huge impact on things. It's nice to see once again how far I've come in the last little while, I have a much stronger sense of confidence. It's great!

This weekend SL gave me some herbal type pills that work really well for his nerves or unsettled feelings, GABA. Have you tried this? I took two yesterday, in half doses. I didn't really notice a different. Being that this is my crazy woman time, I was ready to do anything to get some normalcy. So, I had a nasty upset tummy last night but that might have also been from eating the too spicy, too garlicky, Nepalese food I like.

I slept like a dream though. No nightmares and woke up a few minutes before my alarm-- GO ME!

So that is what is going on with me. I'm also trying to decide if I should take on this flight to Paris for $771 return, taxes in. It looks like I'd have to go by myself but at this moment in my life, this exact minute. That idea scares the living hell out of me. I'd rather touch a spider. Actually... I might prefer Paris, even with the expense factor.

We'll see. I'm giving myself 24 hours. Anything over $500 is not an impulse for me.

so that's me. How about you? :)

Risk Taking

Think back a year ago, remember where you were? What you were doing? Who you were doing (for us un-married folk)? and why?

Now think a little harder, did you expect a year ago today for you to be where you are now?

Hopefully the answer is either an energetic no and reflection of how life had changed and served you well.

Or a grateful yes filled with self appreciation for achieving those goals you only dreamt about last year.

I love people who take risks, big risks. They always seem to come out the other end alright. I'm always so impressed. I am inspired because though I stand at the edge and look at the risks to be taken, I have a hard time jumping on my own. I have to stand there for a while and coax myself to jump. When I do, I am usually glad, but it takes some time and some though.

I am inspired again by this woman and her post about her last year and how she never thought she would be where she is now.

I hope it bring you a little self insight and inspiration as it has for me.

Inspiration: a best feeling.

Easy Sugar Cookies

Here is a simple sugar cookie recipe to impress your loved ones with on Valentine’s Day. It’s a perfect canvas for decorating on any given holiday.
Basic Sugar Cookies
½ cups Softened Butter
¾ cups Sugar
1 Egg
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1-½ cup Flour
½ teaspoons Baking Powder
¼ teaspoons Salt
  • Preheat oven to 350°F/177°C.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium-sized bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, cream together the room temperature butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in an egg and then vanilla. On a low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into wet ingredients until everything is incorporated.
  • Equally divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until it is firm enough to work with.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about a ¼-inch thickness and cut out shapes as desired. Place the cookies onto parchment paper or a lightly greased baking tray.
  • Bake for 6-8 minutes, watching closely until the cookies appear to almost turn golden around the edges. I also check the bottoms to see when mine are done as the top might still be very light but if the bottoms are a light golden brown they are done! Let cool completely before frosting.
I like my cookies simple but if you’re in the mood to get more festive, cut out the cookies with a heart-shaped cookie cutter instead of a round one. You can also top it with the icing recipe below.
ICING
1 cup Powdered Sugar
2 teaspoons Milk, Up To Double The Amount, As Needed
2 teaspoons Light Corn Syrup
¼ teaspoons Vanilla
4 drops Red Food Coloring, If Desired
  • In a small bowl, combine the sugar and milk until smooth. Mix in the corn syrup and vanilla until smooth and glossy. If it is too thick, add the milk in 1/2 teaspoon increments.
  • Add drops of food coloring to each bowl to reach your desired intensity of color. Spread over completely cooled cookies (Top with heart-shaped sprinkles, if desired). Let it sit until the icing is hardened, which takes about 30 minutes to an hour.

Vinegar Hill House: Brooklyn

I know I have said this before but the most important things to me when I travel are experiencing the following:

-Food
-Local Culture
-Nature

I like to learn. I like to eat. I like to experience the place that I am visiting as I would if I lived there.

The intention is still to go to New York so adding to my list of places to eat is:

Yummy... looks good doesn't it?

Also, check out this website as a go to place to find your next spot to nosh at while staying in NYC. omnomnomnom...

Cup of Jo's: NYC Guide

I will not be driving in New York City

When I think of going to New York I think of needing to ask someone I trust about what is best. There are FAR too many options so a few years ago when I talked to Joanna about going there (I was intending to rent her apartment for a few weeks) I knew that this was the place I needed to come to get information.

She doesn't disappoint, here are some good articles that I think I'll keep bookmarked:

I'm sure there will be more but I thought I would add these for now. Good places to start.

Ideally, I think I am leaning to renting an apartment for the majority of the time. How much time do we plan to be in the room anyway? Just to sleep... and maybe to eat a little...

Hotel on Rivington

CO-OP food and Drink in Hotel Rivington

The plan right now is to go to New York in April.

I have started my quest to find accomidations, I'm excited. I found Hotel on Rivington which reminds me of one of the places I stayed in LA.

Meatball Craving

I went to Jersey at the end of December and was introduced to a whole new version of Italian. It was amazing. And for the first time in my life, I had meatballs and it changed my life.

I can't stop thinking about them. I want meatballs all the time. I just had them on Monday of last week and that didn't fix a thing. I want more. I want meatballs all the time. I also want Risotto balls from Borgo.

I came across this today:

Angie’s Meatballs
Yield: 12 Meatballs
Tomato Pasta Sauce
4 oz ground beef
4 oz ground pork
1/4  cup Italian breadcrumbs
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
2.5 tbsp minced onion
2 tbsp milk
1 egg
1 clove minced garlic
1/4 tsp ground black pepper

Preparation:
Heat sauce over medium-high heat.
Combine beef, pork, breadcrumbs, cheese, onion, milk, egg, garlic and pepper. Shape into 12, 1-inch meatballs. Cook in skillet over medium heat until brown on all sides. Move to oven and cook at 350 degrees for 10 minutes until cooked throughout. Serve over pasta with a generous portion of Pasta Sauce (or as my relatives call it-- gravy).

WANT!!!

some one help me please... this is out of control.

Remember the Light

Sometimes finding the light switch is the hardest part, epically in the dark. But keep trying, keep feeling around. In time you will find it as long as you keep looking.

Friends will try to help you, but often they don't always know where it is either. But they will help you look. If they are good friends.

and if you want the help.

Fact.

The Calm

It's the day after my birthday, or rather... the day after the day after my birthday. I feel pretty good about that. Apparently it is also Blue Monday but I'm never effected by it. I had more of a Blue December... frig. That was an uncomfortable month for me. I'm glad that it's all over for another year.

Now, it's time to focus on my BFF's wedding. She is getting married February 2nd 2012, that's soon. Very soon.

I was listening to the radio this morning as I was getting ready, they were talking about marriage and divorce. I am scared of divorce, I never want to have one. Ever. I can have these relationships and screw-up and choose the wrong people or be the wrong person and all of it doesn't matter as much as if I had married any of those boys from my past. Yes, hearts get broken, but... those will mend. Mine has mended many times. I know better now what works for me and just what I am capable of. That's experience that I can't buy. I can't read about. It's learned.

It's nice not to have the pressure now of Christmas, New Years and my birthday. Chrismas was the worst, for the first time i looked at it with sober eyes. I was taken back by the amount of expectations, pressure, anxiety and money. It disgusted me... I've never really been that bitter over something so "joyous"

and Winter has finally come. It's bitter cold outside but we've made it most of the winter with decent weather. I'm not complaining, just marveling at how long it took for things to get cold.

Life feels good right now. Calm. Easy. I like that. Happy Blue Monday everyone!!

How to be Interesting

I wrote a post a few years ago when I started to realise that it was more important to be interesting then to be pretty. That the value of the relationships that revolved around being interesting and involved were much more satisfying then those that revolved around being attractive.

I am now officially 32 years old. I am pretty comfortable in my skin and more importantly, I am excited for life. I have a few armfuls of experience under my belt and I feel like I'm just getting started. I don't watch TV at all anymore, I"m not really sure why I did before. I don't even really watch movies.

I cook. I play guitar. I create. I go on adventures and I spend time with friends. I also think, I spent time thinking and figuring.

I came across this article from Forbes about How To Be More Interesting, I think it's great. What do you think?

My mission statement this year is Adventure and Fearlessness. At least it is for now, so lets get her done and become a little more interesting.
