How to Survive the Running of the Bulls

When you want advice on being famous for no reason, you ask a Kardashian. When you want advice on surviving the running of the bulls, you ask a Hemingway. Here is John (Ernest’s grandson, author of the family memoir Strange Tribe, two-time runner of the bulls) for a few pointers in advance of next month’s run.

The whole week’s a nonstop party.
“You meet friends, you make friends, if they don’t show up, you meet someone else,” he says. “People always ask, ‘How many hours of sleep did you get last night?’ ‘Oh, three. That’s not bad.’”

Well, except the running itself. “If you partied all night, you better be able to wake up and be in some sort of condition to run.”

There are a few simple rules: “You have to be 18. Don’t touch the bull. You can’t be drunk. And if you get knocked down, stay down.”

Leave the running shoes at home. “I just wear Converse.”

It’s over before you know it. “It’s two and a half, three minutes at the max.”

“Whether you’re a good runner or a bad runner, you could have bad luck. But that’s like crossing the street in NYC—you [could] get hit by a car.”

The people are more dangerous than the bulls. “You’ll get knocked down. You’re gonna get scraped, you may break a bone. It gets kind of crazy, with everyone pushing and everything.”

Beware of a bull separated from the herd. “If a bull becomes separated from the herd, it immediately stakes out a territory—anything within striking distance of its horns, he goes for. If he’s got you there, he will keep coming until he kills you.”

His grandfather ran. Or maybe he didn’t. “I see no proof that he did run, but there’s no proof that he didn’t. People have said forever that he used to run—that he ran like mad.”

Squrriel

Friday night I went to Kananaskis with my BFF and the wedding party. We stayed at the lodge and basically played the day away well into the night. There was food, drinks and laughs. I laid on the floor for a good 3 hours in total with a belly so full I thought I was going to bust.

And then we needed candy. So we went to the store in the lobby of the lodge. A delicious tourist trap of sorts I was delighted by the tacky collection of... well... crap.

Wine glass in one hand and over priced crap in the other I enjoyed my saunter through the aisles. I bought $40 worth of candy and a Dino coin holder for SL with his name on the front. Drunk shopping at its finest.

a few hours later, my BFF and I decided to go to the games room and play ping pong. While there we came across $4.25 worth of change in the machines. Delighted we giggled in our new found riches and ran up to the tacky little shop in the lobby. I had seen the little fur animals the last time I was there but I was too distracted by "sam-a-sorus" to even consider buying one. I mean, I wasn't going to use my own money on that.

LB and I spent about 20 minutes going over each animal, looking at the price and doing simple math in our heads. We split the $4.25 so we each basically had $2.00 each to spend. LB picked Duck and Cow (both of which were $0.98) and I picked squirrel, who was $1.98

Meet Squirrel:

awwww.. it's so FLUFFY!!!

with in seconds of taking the picture above, something horrible happened. I patted Squirrel on the head and...

his nose fell off! :(

I was so sad.

So I tried to mend poor squirrel...

Squirrel didn't like that because he could no longer see his nuts.

Stuff My Dad Says: Little Bird

My dad just sent me this email at work:

"When I went to the apt today there was a small bird huddled by the back door. From his looks and behavior he was probably very young and lost. I took a small bun from your freezer, thawed it out and left it for him. He immediately went over and started to eat. When I returned an hour later he was gone. If humans only act in their selfish interests, why did I bother? Humans are also motivated by altruistic interests!"

Lonely

If you’re feeling beat down and exhausted after a long week at the office, just remember it could always be worse: You could be a rare, near-blind, albino seal pup abandoned by your friends and family and left to fend for yourself!

Such was the unfortunate situation for the adorable little furball below, discovered on a beach on Tyuleniy Island, Russia while hiding under a pile of logs and waiting in vain for his mother to come feed him. Luckily, photographer Anatoly Strakhov stumbled upon the pup and the orphaned seal has since been taken into the care of a dolphinarium.

The Journey

Yesterday, I went on an adventure with Spaceman Spiff. We were exploring the bumpy (slight under exaggeration) trail which at one time was the only path to Banff, before planes, trains and automobiles were a part of our life. Half way through our exploring we came across a clearing made of screamers, charred trees and one lonely totem pole. I saw it right away and knew I had to get closer.

Standing about 10 feet tall, it was crude compared to the ones I have seen in other parts of Canada. It was worn and built out of necessity rather then beauty. I was so drawn to it... I can't really explain why. Perhaps it's because I don't really know why it's there. It's somewhat of a mystery to me. Something unknown and not understood. It was beautiful in it's solitude.

The Eagle totem has the following to teach us. Granted, this fits well for me given the turn my life has taken. Thank you life, I love you!
  • People with eagle medicine need their alone time. This gives them the opportunity to confront their fears and be honest with themselves. Eagle may be showing himself to you to remind you of the necessary time you need in solitude before you are able to take flight.

  • With your great vision you may also be looked upon as a mentor by others whether you actively seek this roll in a traditional sense or not be aware that others look up to you. You have great wisdom to share.

  • Opportunities are coming to you that will enable you to reach new heights. Be aware they are coming and have the courage to grab them.

  • Do you feel free to say what you want to say or do what you want to do or are you acting the way you feel others want you to? Release yourself from what others think and do what you need to for your growth and development.

  • Do you feel like you will never find a partner who understands or respects you or have you met somebody who seems unwilling to commit. Be aware that those with eagle medicine choose mates carefully but when they do its for life. If you give your best and value yourself expecting the best for yourself you will attract a mate who feels the same.

  • Eagle is a reminder of our connection to spirit. Have you forgotten yours? Spend some time in meditation and nature reconnecting to source.

Fits very well for me. Right now. Go Eagle!! Heehee...

I'm not sure if I am back to blogging, it all depends on the twists and turns my life takes. I want to make sure that I write with responsibility and that I am present with my life and not focusing all my energy on writing in here. Balance. That's what I am looking for.

Pictures taken by ME! Yay!!

I Love You

This is sick. I think I have a problem…

Yes.
Yes you do.
Good thing Honey Badger doesn’t give a shit.

All he cares about are cobras, running backwards and larva. It’s actually pretty one sided now that I think about it.

He's worth it.

Honey Badger

Tuesday night I slept like crap. I think I went to bed at 3AM ish and maybe only slept for about an hour.. maybe two if I'm lucky.

I was having nightmares about Honey Badger. And his snakes (which, in real life... I don't mind) and his mouse (which in real life seem pretty cute). And the mouses tail...

and Honey Badger's teeth. That Badger needs some orthodontic work. Adult braces for you Honey Badger!

Honey Badger

And for the record Glee did not send me to the site. JP did, right before bed. After drinking a Sleemans and eating Lime Sorbet.

Friggatriskaidekaphobia

Don't be scared of me- I'm only going to cause you to have a mild allergic reaction

Today is Friday the 13th- did you stay home in bed? Are you extra careful when driving to work? Or did you not realise what today was until this very moment when you read this post. That was me, I didn't even realise that it was Friday the 13th until I saw a Facebook status confirming that has to be way this person is having such a bad day (to be honest, this person always has a bad day by constantly generating drama and having a negative outlook on life- but that's a whole other post). Even that didn't change my mind about the day.. it's just like any other day to me and for that I'm grateful.

Apparently, it effects an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States (which is almost Canada but not really but the stats still work to illustrate the subject) Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. "It's been estimated that $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day" according to an article from Nation Geographic News. The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia which also happens to be the title of this post- not a word I made up by mashing the letters on my keyboard as one might assume.

Superstition is interesting and sometimes sad. I am sure that many of us, though we may not consider ourselves superstitious, have some type of a credulous belief or notion which we exercise in our life. I prefer to think of mine as "magical thinking" others may see it as a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder. I use to keep the volume on any device at a number that was even. I also knock on wood whenever I say something that I wish to maintain a positive relationship with. As I think about this now I am aware that as I have become more rational in my thought and less fear driven in life, I am less likely to give into these magical thoughts. Nothing bad is going to happen if I neglect any of these actions.

Another way that I see superstition and other credulous beliefs manifest in life is with black cats. Yes, believe it or not people still are effected by the notion that Black Cats are bad luck. I've seen it at the S.P.C.A. in Calgary and just finished reading an article out of Vancouver that reports the same (the inspiration for this post by the way). On my last trip to the S.C.P.A. to visit the animals I was surprised to see signs in the cat area informing potential families that Black Cats aren't "unlucky" and that they are just the same as any other cat in the adopting area. I could not get over that it was such an obvious issue that signs actually had to be posted to calm the nerves of adopting families. It breaks my heart that such an irrational discrimination would prevent animals from having the same chance of finding a loving home as their other colored friends. Tisk-tisk people, whoever you are.

With that being said, Happy Friday the 13th- I hope your day is just the same as any other day because really, if it were a special day wouldn't Google made a Google Doodle image for it's home page?

With that being said, do you have any superstitions that you believe in? Do you think Friday the 13th is a lucky, unlucky or just a run of the mill average day?

Meet Chaarlee

My mum said she wasn't going to do it but she did. She brought home a puppy after a trip to see her favorite breeder in the United States. My parents haven't had a puppy in the house for 8 years so they kind of forgot what it's like. Lucky for them, Chaarlee (Yes, Charlie but spelt Chaarlee.) is a doll even though he is built like a tank and tough like one too.

Yes, my ear is a little green.
It's from my tattoo, I'm hard core that way.

Photobucket
This stick is my biggest achievement yet!

With their wild enthusiasm and value for the small things in life, puppies have the ability to put a smile on almost any face. There is a lot that people can learn from animals most importantly the capability to enjoy the simple things in life and acceptance. Vital to any happy existence- I think.

Take a break from your life today and go hug a puppy!

Northern Exposure

BREAKING NEWS: Loose moose involved in wild goose chase through metropolis Calgary. True story. Apparently there was a moose chase going on in the very core of my lovely little city. It was last year that Laura and I had a close encounter of the moose kind  in an older suburb area of the city. Maybe there is a trend going on here. Calgary is THE place to be if you are a young teenage moose- almost like Vegas for boys.

Polite Moose always wait for the walk light to turn green before crossing the street

It's a lovely day to take an early lunch- the boss won't mind.

This is EXACTLY the place you should be standing. In a planter- excellent.

Everything was all a Twitter with the news yesterday- long story short. Moose found self in city. People found moose in city. People took pictures and called authorities. Moose was safely assisted back to the wild. The End. Poor little guy, he must have been a little worried being in this strange ol' city.

That's my que to get the heck out of the city this weekend.

Have a lovely Friday!

Ageless Mum

Look at this woman- can you believe that she is almost 80 years old? Look at the woman, not the puppy sillies! Yes, this woman is almost 80 and she is my mum. This picture was taken a few days ago somewhere in the United States (look at the creepy rain clouds in the back ground- looks like a storm is brewing) and I think this means I'll be a firecracker by the time I am her age as well.

Betty White is another woman- WOWEE! I just watched her host SNL last night and my goodness, that woman's still got spice. I'm going to be like her when I'm 88 1/2 years old and I can't wait. I can wait.. but I'm just saying.

Anyway, that puppy is my Mum's new puppy. He doesn't have a name yet and I get to meet him for the first time tonight. Yippee! I'm going to take my fancy dancy camera and take some good pictures of him. I'll post them if they are any good.

Death Bear

He's real. As real as you, me and Brooklyn (the city he lives in). It's Death Bear. I'm not making this up, if I were he wouldn't be as scary and he would be a bunny. A bunny called Death Bunny and it wouldn't be wearing a black helmet because that's just scary. But I'm not making this up and Death Bear really does exist.

"Death Bear

We all have someone or something we would rather just forget. Things fall apart. Love hurts. Dreams die. But when you summon Death Bear to your door, you can rest assured that help has come. At first you may be intimidated by his stature and color (7 feet tall with a hard, black bear head, black jumpsuit, and black boots), but absorbing the memories of others is a dark art, and Death Bear must present himself appropriately for this solemn duty. Death Bear will take things from you that trigger painful memories and stow them away in his cave where they will remain forever allowing you to move on with your life. Give him an ex's clothes, old photos, mementos, letters, etc. Death Bear is here to assist you in your time of tragedy, heartbreak, and loss. Let Death Bear help you, and absorb your pain into his cave.

Death Bear in the news:

So, do you have anything for dear ol' Death Bear?

(this post feels creepier then I meant it to be- sorry... Happy Friday!)

Pheasant

My mum has a Pheasant living in her backyard. Okay, my MUM doesn't but her BFF who lives down the road does. My mum just gets the male on her fence pounding his chest and acting like a typical cock. Seriously. The men are really very pretty birds, especially when seeing them for the first time in person. It was about a week ago when I saw a green, red and speckled bird hiding in the bush. I stopped the car because I thought it was a turkey until it flew away displaying its elegant plumage and long tail feathers.

The lady birds which are much less showy then the male (often the case with almost all birds) are notorious for being neglectful mothers. Not only do they just lay their eggs in any ol' bush but they will take off, leaving the nest unattended for hours and sometimes days on end. Tisk-tisk Lady Pheasant! So, I'm hoping that this nest that my mum's BFF has in her backyard will survive. There is a jerky little red squirrel who thinks himself to be the ruler of the neighbourhood, I really do hope that he doesn't find the nest and decided to have a gourmet dinner of unhatched Pheasant eggs. Especially if the mother is off at the near by waterhole (South Glenmore Park) trying to get in good with the Geese and Swans.

Time will only tell.

Baby Elephant Friday

I love this picture of the new born baby elephant that arrived at the Sydney, Australia zoo. It was a long labour for the mother but after 6 days the little guy popped out- you can see the joy displayed in the Mama Elephants face here! Nothing says "that was hard work" like throwing some hay on your back.

Speaking of hard work, Friday is here and I have a busy weekend ahead of me. I hope tonight to just stay at home and do some laundry and maybe upload some pictures I have taken over the winter months with my new camera.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Heritage Park

I haven't been to Heritage Park in years so last weekend I made a point of going. I had been grocery shopping at the Safeway near my parents place and they had given me two 50% off gate admission tickets. WHY NOT! It was on my list anyway... It was delightfully busy with line ups threading out of the bakery. Everyone I saw was content with a a hot coco in one hand a fresh cinnamon bun in the other. I just love the little town in the park- I enjoy looking through the old Heritage houses imagining that I could come home to one of them one day. With the many wood burning fire places, large kitchen, many bedrooms and sprawling porches I was in a dream world for a good 3 hours.

The dentist was the only thing that didn't look as though it had changed much- tee hee

"Please do not touch" but nothing said "Please do not sit"... top floor of an old farm house warmed by the afternoon sun

Eyeing up the horse. I think he was allergic to me as well

That's better . friends....

REAL Reindeer walking down Main Street! REAL Reindeer!

See REAL! At first I was a little annoyed (and impressed) that they would glue antlers on deer but then it dawned on me that reindeer actually do exist. Not my brightest moments.

Jingly Bell Hay Rides- I couldn't justify standing in line for an hour just to rise around the park in an over packed wagon. They were fun to look at though. I kept calling them cars though... "Watch out! Here comes one of those cars!"

Is that a Reindeer or a Blanche? I will never tell!

I had a wonderful time- they have done a wonderful job of keeping the park interesting and new. With the addition of Gasoline Alley (which I must admit wasn't worth the extra admission. I didn't pay it and just walked right in view the collection of cars. Naughty... I know) and many new stores plus a fancy dancy new restaurant that serves all the kinds of food I like, I was impressed. I totally plan to go again- next time though I plan to go when the rides are up and running. Nothing scares me more then a good ol' fashion Ferris wheel- EEK!
OOOOHHH! PS! I forgot to also state that they have an ice rink that NEVER MELTS! For real- I think because we have such hot and cold winters in Calgary they needed something that wasn't ice and wouldn't melt. As some of you remember when we had the 1988 Olympics we were in the middle of +20°c weather due to one of those lovely Chinooks.

Christian the Lion (Just for Rolley)

I was reminded by my Blogger friend Rolley during a recent comment he had made on my Baby Rhino post about Christian the Lion.

Rolley, please see video below:

That is your fuzzy, warm video for the day!
